Thanks for your help on this.  

I guess my advice for sarge users is to not trust the sparse option of
the sarge version tar for creating archives.  

I'm less bothered about this than I might be because I think the sparse
option probably isn't helping much (and could be hurting performance) if
the resulting archive is going to be gzip or bzip2 compressed anyway.
If someone is motivated to isolate the problem and generate a minimal
patch for the sarge version of tar, let me know, otherwise I do not plan
to spend any more time on this bug.
