The fact that metadata preallocation is enabled when it occurs could be
relevant information too.

(my guess is that it is _not_ a kernel-related regression, but I could be

Cross posting what I just posted to bug #1030510 (FTBFS of mariadb on s390x). I'm absolutely not claiming anything, but two recent bugs where the kernel *might* be involved is too much coincidence in my book.

I am seeing something weird on ci.debian.net too, which also runs stable. I upgraded the systems several days ago which pulled in a new security kernel. Since then I'm seeing that mariadb fails to install on s390x in tests because the install of mariadb-server-10.6 (1:10.6.11-2 testing) or mariadb-server (1:10.11.1-4 unstable) times out.
