If you really insist on having that functionality, wouldn't it be anyway better to:
- Add a systemd.timer that regularly (perhaps weekly?) calls update-smart-drivedb instead of doing it only once in postinst, where it's unlikely to be of much use, because the package was just upgraded, so there's a good change that it's drivedb.h is still current. - But even then, please don't run that out of the box. Either let people manually enable it or provide a debconf question where one can at least choose to opt-out once and for all. Though even *with* debconf I'd still prefer if this was an opt-in.
