I'd like to apologize in advance for the tone of this message, but
the situation with this package is really irritating. Ten months
ago, I added a "me-too" type message to bug #268471 begging for the
current upstream version to replace the one in Debian. Not only did
nothing ever come of that, but this bug appeared and got very
quickly quashed, not by packaging the current upstream version from
two and a half years ago, but by repackaging the same version from
six (!!) years ago. If you can't bother to even look at a package
for SIX YEARS, what in the name of all that's decent in the world
has prevented you from filing an RFA in the WNPP in all that time?

a) the license situation for v3 is not as clear cut as v2 because of
the gracenote stuff IIRC

The upstream website also has a patch relating to that, and AFAICT (but I haven't looked closely), the source tarball does not include any non-GPL Gracenote stuff, which is a separate, binary-only download.

b) it's an old bit of software - probably the only real use for it is
for people with CD changers which generally aren't well supported by
most CD players. Integration with gnome and KDE for exampe are IIRC
non-existant

Yes, it's old. I thought it somewhat of an embarrassment that Debian's version is even older. There are more uses for it than just CD changers (although I do have one, but never thought of trying it with xmcd before now). Integration with GNOME or KDE is not required for it to work reasonably well with them, and may be undesirable when using XFCE or fluxbox.

c) lack of time and effort on my behalf (definitely biggest problem)

That's what RFA's are for.

d) my uploads are currently bouncing and I havn't had any response
from ftp-admins as to why this is happening

Nobody's perfekt.

e) you are more than welcome to submit a patch

That should always be an option, but never the only option.

Regarding WNPP, that could apply for alot of packages - I'm not sure
it'd help much - people can see the bugs and are always welcome to do
NMUs.

Adrian

If you mean packages in general, I believe work is being done to improve the situation. If you're specifically referring to your own packages, I have one thing to say: The WNPP list is your friend.
