Severity: serious
Control: affects -1 src:libhdate

Should we remove hdate-applet from Debian? It was removed from Testing
because it depends on gtk2 which is being removed from Debian. Its
last upstream release was in 2010.

The package description in Debian and upstream describes it as an
applet for the GNOME desktop. This doesn't work at all with current
GNOME. It also doesn't work with either GNOME Flashback or MATE, 2
forks of a GNOME 2 experience. I noticed that it is installing a file
to /usr/lib/*/bonobo/servers/ but everything bonobo was removed from
Debian many years ago.

Technically, the package also provides a .desktop file pointing to
/usr/bin/ghcal (there is also /usr/bin/ghcal-he). That mini app still
works.

Both KDE Plasma and GNOME Shell have plugins or extensions to add a
Hebrew calendar to the system panel. I think those might be what more
people are looking for than the remaining functionality in
hdate-applet.

hdate-applet is the last user of libhdate, so libhdate should be
removed if hdate-applet is removed.

I plan to convert this into a removal bug if there are no objections
in the coming weeks.

Thank you,
Jeremy Bícha
