After reading [1] I think it would be best to switch GLEW back
to X11-only.
The current static-only libGLEW-X11.a causes static linking
in users, which is undesirable (but would be fixable by also
building a shared library).
The fundamental issue is GLEW having to be compiled for either
X11 or EGL.
Mixing (through library dependencies) EGL and X11 versions of
GLEW in the same binary cannot work (see hugin in [1]), and
might easily happen when both are used by different packages.
The general solution seems to be to move away from GLEW,[1,2]
and the package that triggered this whole change in #1057479
has just moved away from GLEW (see #1133157).
Reverting back to the trixie status quo of X11-only would
avoid breaking anything that worked before, while users
who want/need EGL should move away from GLEW.
