Could you please retest this issue with `ledger 3.4.1-3+b1`, currently available in unstable?
I tested it in a fresh Debian sid environment and could not reproduce the
failure.
Script:
$ cat > journal.ledger <<'EOF'
2026-01-01 Test
Assets:Cash 10 EUR
Income:Test
EOF
$ ledger -f journal.ledger bal
10 EUR Assets:Cash
-10 EUR Income:Test
--------------------
0
$ ledger -f /dev/null bal
$ echo $?
0
Environment:
$ apt-cache policy ledger
ledger:
Installed: 3.4.1-3+b1
Candidate: 3.4.1-3+b1
Version table:
*** 3.4.1-3+b1 500
500 http://deb.debian.org/debian sid/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
$ cat /etc/debian_version

I tested this in a sid chroot.
