Dear Marten,

unfortunately it is not possible to simply drop the gconf schemas at some
default location where gconf2 could find them, if installed afterwards.
Every schema needs to be registered with gconf2 explicitely.

gconf2 mainly depends on libxml2, libglib2.0 and python, which are
rather standard on most of the systems now. They only miss there, where
none of XFCE/GNOME/KDE or any of the related programs are installed.

I don't like the idea of having grace depend on gconf2 either, but
technically this is for the moment the best way to fix a release
critical bug. GNOME is the default desktop installed by debian and
having a project preview in the file manager is really useful.

I am currently working on a solution which will not bloat the user's
system with too many dependencies, if the user does not want to, but
still offer project previews not only with GNOME but also with KDE.

Thank you for your feedback,
Ionut

PS We simply use grace as a plotting program, along with gnuplot,
matlab, mathematica & whatever gets the job done :-)
