Ok, let's try building just the raw upstream package; trust me, there aren't any significant debian changes outside of the configuration stuff, and besides, we aren't going to install any of this, just test from the build directory. $ apt-get source fontconfig $ tar xzf fontconfig_2.4.2.orig.tar.gz $ cd fontconfig-2.4.2/ $ ./configure --sysconfdir=/etc --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share/man --localstatedir=/var CFLAGS=-g $ make $ cd fc-cache $ su # ../libtool --mode=execute gdb fc-cache (gdb) run -f > /usr/bin/perl: symbol lookup error: > /usr/lib/perl/5.8/auto/List/Util/Util.so: undefined symbol: Perl_fv_init I haven't a clue what that could mean, I'm afraid.
