Well, after a bit more playing ... ubuntu 6.10 (edgy), does have a similar problem. It cannot find the cdrom device (our netinst isos have the same problem).
I tried then a Yellow Dog 4.1 install, and it worked fine, and even was using udev, altough probably an antiquated version (2.6.15-rc5 based kernel, and udev 071).
