These are the buildds that use sudo instead of fakeroot, and the problem is installing into $(PWD), which gets unset by sudo. The fix is to replace $(PWD) with $(CURDIR), which is set by make. The issue is only dormant in etch (0.24-1), since the packages were built before the sudo environment cleaning change in early 2006. Still, by my reading of the etch RC policy ('Packages must be buildable within the same release'), I assume this is RC for etch too.
