I've just been having a look at the difficulty of the targetted fix.

Am I right in my understanding that the bug is trimming the 4 bytes from
the start of the packet in the reader is only needed on the BSD
platforms, but the old version does it on any non-DARWIN, non-WIN32
platform?

The only other differences that I can see are that there is now a
heartbeat for Ayiya, a slight structure change which may or may not be
hidden by not packing the struct, and the change in port number.

All four of these are trivial to produce a targetted patch for...

Am I on the right track, or have I missed something? (There's also
a good bit of refactoring work done, but I think I've followed it
all OK...)
