Package: pvm
Version: 3.4.2-12
Severity: wishlist

To sum up #264403 and #265697 (and since this really is a separate bug
report, #264403 was fixed in 3.4.2-12 and #265697 is an rpvm bug,
although depending on this one): pvm could use a shared libgpvm3 in
addition to a shared libpvm3, and possibly a libpvm3-pic as well.

My rationale for making this bug wishlist and not serious is that PVM
was never really intended to be built as shared libraries; every serious
PVM user would link statically to PVM (and the math libraries, and libc,
etc.) anyhow for the performance benefits so this goes under the
"explicitly intended from upstream" clause of policy 8.3.

An alternative would be to make a special package with static libpvm3
and libgpvm3 compiled with -fPIC (so stuff like rpvm could make shared
libraries without requiring shared libpvm3 and libgpvm3), but this
would be almost as intrusive as a full shared library without any real
gains that I can see. Anyhow, policy does not seem to require such a
thing, so the bug report is still wishlist.

This wishlist request will not be fixed for sarge, as I do not intend to
destabilize pvm to make rpvm build on non-i386 architectures (on which
it has never built before anyhow, so it is non-RC).
