Well, this again shows how theory and practical matters differ. Most of the Swiss population (probably > 95%) lives in the so-called "Mittelland" (middle land) which lies at 350-550 meters (~1000-1600 ft) between the two primary mountain ranges of the Jura and the Swiss Alps.
