Hello all, This is just to let all know that I've finally finished working all the quirks for splashy and the C version of splashy is ready for prime time.
As you all know, splashy (a user-space, POSIX --a.k.a no distro specific or even linux specific--, boot splash application) was ported from C++ to C in an effort to minimize dependancies and hopefully get a more robust, concise and fast binary that can at the same time be customizable via an XML file. The non-static version of splashy, which will run fine for 90% percent of Linux (desktop) users, comprises a mere 15k after being compiled and stripped. There is an on-going effort to get splashy to compile statically. That effort has its merits for the other 10% of desktop users -- namely the ones who have separate partitions for /usr. The last bug that was waiting in the squashing FIFO was the F2/ESC don't kill splashy bug. This has been fixed. And as of this moment, there are no other major bugs waiting to be squashed, so, please hack away splashy from the following sources. Please note that this is mainly a beta quality software, so it's not meant for newbies (yet). We will be releasing this in a very short period. Once the release is made, splashy will enter debian repositories and you (yes you newbies) will be able to install splashy as any other debian application: apt-get update && apt-get install splashy. However, if you don't mind breaking your box, here is the info on how to get your hands on it: NOTE: for those of you who were using usplash (our old name for the project), debsplash (our fbsplash port from gentoo), bootsplash (that old stuff that we used to pack before) or older versions of splashy (anything with 0.1* version but not 0.1.1+SVN+7), you will need to purge the older packages first before you install this one: apt-get --purge remove $PACKAGES. Where $PACKAGES is one or more of those. So, if you think you can help us in anyway, please join us in the IRC channel. It doesn't have to be code necessarily. Anything from documentation, updating our wiki pages, a logo for the project, or testing/debugging will do. Enjoy! p.s. for those of you who were using the http://www.kiskeyix.org repository, you can now switch to the one in alioth as this will be the updated one from now on. -- ----)(----- Luis M System Administrator Kiskeyix.org "We think basically you watch television to turn your brain off, and you work on your computer when you want to turn your brain on" -- Steve Jobs in an interview for MacWorld Magazine 2004-Feb No .doc: http://www.fsf.org/philosophy/no-word-attachments.es.html
