Couldn't we just use the desktop wallpaper for the login screen, i.e. we set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename /usr/share/images/desktop-base/desktop-background in /usr/share/gdm/greeter-config/10_desktop_base Benefits are: - You can easily override the default using update-alternatives, currently it is hard coded without an easy way to override using the standard Debian mechanisms. - You have a very smooth transition from login screen to the desktop. I tested it, looks pretty slick if you don't have the usual flicker. - We don't need a separate wallpaper for the gdm greeter → less work, less space -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth?
