This is a bit different, Sam. The I switch works in tar in potato. Your comment would apply if this were a temporary change and I would again work (ie compress with bzip2) by the time woody is released, but that's not the intention, is it? Frankly, I don't see why gnu tar needs to be compatible with OS-specific versions because most of those are feature-poor anyway.
