Were they empty when the package was removed, or only after it was purged? If the latter, then at the moment, you'll have to remove them manually in your postrm: rmdir /etc/sound/events 2>/dev/null || true etc. There is currently a wishlist against dpkg with a suggested way of dealing with this issue, see bug#112386.
