Actually im thing now that the drawback of requiring a specialist client
to query a metadata server would be a big drawback.

It could probably be done with HTTP, using cgi scripts (i dont know much
about this), that way standard clients can be used to retrieve pieces of
the Packages's file by putting the querry in the url.

Busybox wget could be used from the rescue disk to retrieve selective
metadata, which would solve a couple of problems at once.
