Thanks for this pointer. My debiansynch script never runs into problem "1. rsync -r" since it always does single file transfers. And for problem "2. rsync of near identical files" it's not astonishing using a high cpu load for a short period, an ftp transfer simply distributes its cpu load over a longer period. O.
