The only major new operand added from i586->i686 was cmov. In most cases using cmov is a HUGE win because you avoid branching. Even as a owner of a C3 cpu, I would leave C3 on the other side of the fence, slowing down 99% of Athlon/PII users for the sake of 1% of C3 users doesn't make sense.
