With a s/:/=/ and a sources.list line pointing at sid, say, two days ago on http://snapshot.debian.net/, this would have worked. If the Debian Reference doesn't mention this, it certainly should, but this is something that your friend could have solved by asking another Debian user IRL, on debian-user or on IRC.
