Just like to thank everybody for their opinions. I think that I've probably got enough to think about for now. Aside from the recommendations for languages and editors, the idea of learning multiple languages to gain more comprehensive expression for programming concepts, and also learning an initial language that has a tighter syntax control to teach good discipline for later, were interesting.
