Umm, it's not maintained *upstream*; I maintain the debian package.

It is worth porting the code to use db, even using the dbm-style
interfaces, but since there's no data-level compatibility I need to
package up a libc6 gdbm anyhow... probably this weekend... but don't
wait for it, start on converting [which should be trivial, since
you're presumably using all the dbm_* interfaces anyway...]
