0xc2 is LATIN CAPITAL LETTER A WITH CIRCUMFLEX... Sounds like you tried to give UTF-8 to Perl without the "use utf-8" pragma to tell it your script is in UTF-8 (the non-breaking space is encoded in UTF-8 as 0xc2 0xa0). However, on my system it breaks out with the same error even with "use utf8;" on top, so I guess it's broken anyhow (and a bug against perl?).
