Is it even possible to directly use TeX fonts from a high-level
GTK/whatever program without modifying the program in question? If so,
it's way too unobvious for me...

According to the papers upstream published, it was done using Metafont,
Metapost and Metatype1, and _then_ heavily processed. The available
formaps are Type1 and TTF, I used the latter.

Well, you're overestimating my part. What I did was _removing_ the
existing hinting, as it's worse than no hints at all.

I did attempt improving the upstream hinting, however, I noticed that
simply letting FontForge autohint it gives astonishing results (mostly
for the Regular and Bold variants). For example, the "e" glyph is a tiny
bit below the line, making the original hints put the lowest part a pixel
lower than it's the case for most other letters. FontForge can
automatically correct this -- and so does FreeType's autohinter. It may
be a coincidence that autohinting works so well here, or perhaps simply
Poltawski did a very good job.

GUST provides a number of other fonts, but the only other original one is
Aktykwa Torunska. It doesn't look as good on the screen, however (but
it's not bad either). Both fonts share the general resemblance, and the
latter one has much wider charset coverage. Perhaps it may be a good idea
to provide both in this package... your call.

Anyway, a scientific poll conducted on three people proved that Antykwa
Poltawskiego looks "much better" that Bitstream Vera for places where
serif fonts fit. IMO they're right :p and good fonts are valuable, thus
this ITP.
