Everything depends on how much we're 'paying' for such a support. If the overhead gets very hard to handle we better choose to drop some support in order to keep ourselves sane. You will allways have the option of bootstraping your system using an older version of Debian, for example, and then upgrading to the version you actually want to use. We should not be exchanging our developers' sanity for somewhat rare corner cases which you can work around in a somewhat easy way.
