Here is what Nicolas (the upsrteam author) said: You should note that there is a suid app installed (ddcpci), this is required because ddccontrol needs to read/write directly to the PCI memory, because there is no I2C support for Intel IGPs in the kernel and nVidia I2C support conflicts with the 3D-accelerated proprietary drivers. Every suid app could be a security problem (the code is very simple so I don't think so, but we never know .-)).
