[Yes, I realize this is a really old thread... I haven't been reading
-devel lately.

Not necessarily true.

- They may be compiled with lower optimization.
- They may be compiled with behavior-altering debugging options.

I believe the former is true for libc6-dbg and I know the latter is
true for libncurses5-dbg; it can record trace files for later
debugging, which has some runtime overhead.

[I've been thinking about enabling it by default anyway, but it's the
sort of thing that needs to be measured first.]
