I really really like the "there is more than one way to do it" approach and consider it a vital part of Debian. There are tiny packages, and there are huge ones. Complex and simple ones, native and non-native ones. Being forced to use the complex SCM that might be needed to maintain a huge, compex and non-native package for doing a trivial, simple and native package sounds awfully uncomforable.
