Be really careful then! We have to synchronize uploads when the shared memory segment layout of the driver changes. <download, build, run, inspect> Oh, wait. Gsynaptics already includes a different (much older) version of struct SynapticsSHM. It won't work with the current synaptics driver available in etch. I tested 0.9.5 here that destroyed my runtime configuration :) Probably taking synaptics.h from the driver sources and stripping the unnecessary definitions (the non public part, see comments) is enough.
