My point is the only reliable way to determine that is via /etc/apt/sources and /etc/apt/preferences, not to mention /var/lib/dpkg/status (because packages might be on hold). Yes, many systems don't mix-n-match, and are pure etch or whatever. The contents of /etc/debian_release doesn't, and can't, tell you that, no matter how it's packaged.
