why do you use sarge? Etch is stable since the beginnign of April, and
it supports udev just fine out of the box.

Also there's live-helper[1] in testing now, which is probably a more
easy way to create live-cds. Not sure how well it works with Etch,
though - never tried it.

P.S. There're a lot of live CDs out there allready, probably you want to
explain your reason to create a live cd, at least it could rise your
chances to be pointed to a well-working and easy way to reach your goal.
