I don't know yet really. I imagine that someone doing an NMU on a source package using the new format would want to split his changes in separate logical patches to be added in the series file. How would one do that without having to use/learn the VCS/patch management tool of choice used by the author? The extracted source should at least keep a list of applied patches so that new patches are taken into accoun when the source is regenerated.
