This is not the point IMO. The point is that we won't be able in the
near future (5 years?) to converge to a single well-known $VCS, there
are just too many, and we can't require all free software eyes to grok
it. On the contrary it is the case that a list of (sequential) .diff
files are understandable by whoever is manipulating free software source
code.

So yes, in this respect I concur that a set of published (though
commented!) patches is better than $VCS.

PS I'm also convinced that 10 years from now the free software world
