ps, top and wtmp/utmp (ie w,last, etc) have user name limits. For ps and top, it seem to be the POSIX limit of 8 characters, while wtmp/utmp have 32 characters as the limit (see /usr/include/bits/utmp.h). To avoid admins being surprised when using ps and top, I would strongly recommend to avoid more than 8 characters in usernames.
