Yes, SCSI scanners still exist, and they're still used through /dev/sgX. Actually, all high-volume, high-speed scanners are SCSI. Some have a USB interface too, but it's slower. You can pull that from udev if you wish, as support for SCSI scanners has been added upstream to the udev rules and I can backport that to unstable.
