Current status is systemd rivaling upstart and it is not clear at all whether a switch will happen in the near future (at least not to me). And I surely have better things to do than guessing which direction will finally win, make sure the corresponding system will work on kfreebsd and risking huge amounts of work becomming useless in a blink when my guess was wrong. *iff* it was reasonably clear porting upstart would be the required step I'm rather certain -bsd@ would be working on it. But please noone expect us to support multiple -- currently linux-only -- init alternatives just because they *might* *eventually* become default in Debian *some* day.
