Yeah, I would love to have this as well. Currently, I do:
./debian/rules get-vcs-source

which adds upstream repository, does a "git fetch upstream" and create
the orig.tar.xz for me.

It's not as nice as what you describe (which I would like to have too),
but it is a nice workaround.
