Ubuntu had to make a decision on how to best handle the maintainer information for packages synced directly from Debian. On the one hand, you want to acknowledge the work of others. On the other, you don't want the Debian maintainer blamed/bothered by users for issues with the package that are Ubuntu specific. This is the resulting compromise: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebianMaintainerField That said, Debian maintainers should not be receiving automatic emails without explicitly opting in. If they do, that is a bug that should be fixed.
