I sat down with Ian at DebConf to talk about pristine-tar, and on the contrary it was quite clear to me that they would be happy to accept somebody else's implementation of pristine-tar in tag2upload, assuming the usual code review expectations. Indeed, why else would they have themselves filed https://bugs.debian.org/1106071 with "wanted:" in the title, and "Therefore I think tag2upload *should* support pristine-tar." in the message?

(There were some initial misconceptions in that bug, but I believe they've been sorted out now. No need to go over them again.)
