It will likely close a lot of problem on the i386 platform but may be done

So, SSE2 means that the minimum baseline would be a Pentium 4

The i386 port is not for bare hardware since trixie.

Not sure that such a baseline raise makes sense.

It already happened in trixie though, and it makes sense because it's expected that the i386 packages are used on an amd64 kernel and hardware.
