For the record, Alexandre's conservativeness is well-justified. Debian maintainers should feel free to patch individual Debian packages, but fixing this problem upstream is a lot harder than it appears at first glance. The best solution I can come up with is to *always* change a library's soname when its dependencies change. I believe it was Joel Klecker who mentioned something about `libapi' patches for egcs that were supposed to implement this automatically.
