It is this way. AX ist the low part of EAX (Since eax and ax shall make the same for values less then 2^16.) And there is no direct way to address to higher 16 Bits. But as a shr eax,16 need only one cycle it is not that serious. Hochachtungsvoll, Bernhard R. Link
