I've now tested my version of Goswin's patch by running my chroot-minimizing piuparts (with the patched dpkg in the chroot) against all packages that used to work. They all work, except a couple of hundred, which fail due to missing dependencies (usually on adduser or debconf related things), no errors due to dpkg failures.
