Frank Lichetenheld commited the fix for this in the brand new dpkg SVN on svn.debian.org (/svn/dpkg). So, we can expect the next dpkg release to include this. Frank proposed to upload a new dpkg just after next week-end. If you (or Joey) want to check this as I know you're currently busy working on g-i, I suggest you build a test dpkg package from the SVN.
