The two bug reports are merged and I was responding to Simon Richter's
mail of 2007-11-04 14:44:41 +0100.  Evidently neither of us had
noticed the merger.  Thanks for being observant and reopening the bug.

Ah, yes.

Bill, can you give me a reference to what you consider the definitive
definition of the behaviour of your proposed patch ?  Presumably this
would be in the form of a policy amendment ?

Both #229357 and #218893 are very long and it would save some time if
you could point out what you think is the current final spec and
whether there are any outstanding issues that you would like the dpkg
developers to decide on.
