Hi,
older versions of the totem-gstreamer and totem-xine added an
alternative in the postinst. Somewhere around 2.22, it was changed to
add two new slave alternatives.
However, it looks like the slave alternatives are completely ignored,
and nothing is done until the master alternative is unregistered and
registered again with its new slaves.
It would be pretty annoying for users to remove the existing alternative
before registering the new one, since it would break customizations.
This is why I consider it a bug in update-alternatives, which should add
new slave alternatives (and maybe also remove unused ones) as it sees
fit.
