Is that after or before the line ". /etc/default/syslogd"? What do you have in /etc/default/syslogd? Why do you believe that start-stop-daemon is at fault? start-stop-daemon doesn't see/use this variable, it's only passed as command line argument so the name of the variable should not have any influence.
