In the Yocto Project builds we use rootfs processing to install into an emulate chroot using the pseudo tool. Until recently, the pseudo tool had a bug where 'realpath' would canonicalize a path, even if the target did not exist.
When this bug was fixed (to conform to POSIX and glibc behavior), it exposed an issue in dpkg that it was always trying to canonicalize the hard coded ADMINDIR path (appended to the rootfs.) In the case of the Yocto Project, this path will never exist. (any questions, please CC/TO me as I'm not subscribed to the debian-dpkg mailing list.) Thank you!
